The Deregulation of Pennsylvania Utilities and the Anticipation of Price Hikes in 2011

Consumers can expect to see a jump in their electric bills when the Pennsylvania Utilities’ rate cap expires at the end of 2010. According to PECO, consumers can expect to see an increase between 10 and 15 percent in their electric bills beginning in January 2011.
One of the biggest consumers of energy is heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, HVAC systems account between 40 and 60% of the total energy use in commercial and residential buildings. The city of Philadelphia alone spent an estimated $48 million on electricity, heating oil, and natural gas during its ‘08-‘09 fiscal year.
So, what can you do now in preparation of these upcoming price hikes?
