Chemical Lab Hood Exhaust System
When a chemical research facility recently upgraded their lab hood exhaust system by removing over 150 individual exhaust fans and installing a common exhaust system for the lab hoods, they contracted SMCA of Philadelphia and Vicinity member contractor Ernest D. Menold, Inc.

The scope of work included:
- Measuring and sketching ductwork on the roof and in the laboratories.
- Fabrication of ductwork, including stainless steel exhaust duct.
- Installation of ductwork on a phased basis to reduce downtime for researchers.
- Installation of hi-efficiency exhaust fans.
- Leak testing of the system.
- Air balancing the new system.
The new system uses less energy (150 fan motors replaced by two fan motors), and is much more efficient.
